Tom's Burned-Down Café
As a student at the U. Minnesota, used to escape the Madeline Island. This small island serves as a gateway to the National Park Archipelago Apostal Islands, on Lake Superior, three hours north of Minneapolis. His village is made up of three streets populated by artists, fishermen and farmers. As the national park is quoted by sailboat and kayak, a small marina and a terminal for the boat that transports people to the mainland.
During my first summer on the island, frequented "Tom's Café, a nightclub full of striking style ornaments" J. Cruz. " Gathered at Tom's major artistic figures of the fauna of the island. But in 1990, a friend told me something terrible. Tom's was on fire.
The following summer I returned to the island. I got off the boat. On the way to my lodging, I came across a surprise. Indeed, where once was Tom's and had only a charred hull. But alongside, there were a dozen outdoor tables. Lying between the tables, were all curious ornaments rescued from the fire: neon signs, bottles, musical instruments, wooden benches with thousands of names carved with a knife. To enter, had to pass a wooden fence. On wood hung two handwritten signs. The first said "Tom's Burn Down Café" (Coffee set fire to Tom). The other one? "Open." Was packed.
All summer the tables were taken over. Does the wave? Unbelievable. Without knowing it, Tom had turned his disaster into a marketing coup. 20 years later, "Tom's Burned Down Café" business as usual. You scream and silver. Is legendary. Tom has become a cultural center that receives significant national writers. Legendary touch Chicago blues musicians. I thought Tom
few days ago, while walking from the hill of Santo Domingo to Serrano Street Prat. There, in front of the bakery of the same name, I stopped. "This street, I thought," even with the empty lot and the town burned, it is beautiful. " I fell in love for the umpteenth time.
long ago, hundreds of characters gathered at the Center for the Study of Contemporary Urban Development (CUD) to discuss the future of this transcendental artery. Presented by representatives of four universities, the IMV, ICOMOS and the Council of Monuments.
My conclusion? This street inspires great passions. However, without detracting from the urgency of having a permanent urban settlement, I wonder: Would not it be possible to find a destination such as "Tom's" while?
Why not spend the last Friday of the month to assemble there in the street, a major exhibition of artists Buenos Aires? Another day could mount an exhibition of organic products produced by regional farmers. Gradually come hordes of people who, today, we only know the place by the owners sad. Discover a sparkling, full of life. There among the ashes, it would appear a different future, dazzling.
